The idea was sparked, funnily enough, in my Local Royal Air Force Association Club over a beer or two back in late August 2010. As it was the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, we wanted to help raise some money and do something unique for wings. Having recently just received a Lottery grant for the squadron and spent £3000 on upgrading our flight simulator, I thought it would be a good idea as a fundraiser and also a good test of the new flight simulator equipment. The challenge to fly around the northern hemisphere within 48 hours was born and so the planing and perpetration began!
The event was a great success and we managed to raise £416 for wings as well has having an epic journey without leaving the Squadron. Some of our stops included Cyprus, Kandahar, Tokyo, Fairbanks, to names a few, and finishing back were we started at RAF Brize Norton. On the journey back home after the Landing Party and only 2 hours sleep in 60 hours, the questions was asked..... What are we doing for it next year? The states was my answer, so ever since September last year the planning and training has been underway.
Why do it
Cadets and staff have close ties with the Royal Air Force Association as well as the Royal British Legion and Help for Heroes. But with the Wings Appeal its closer to home, as many squadrons have been involved with Melton Mowbray Branch and Club of RAFA. Many cadets have been members of this club and gone on into the forces and it is only fitting we offer help and support witch ever way we can. I hope you will help us support this worthy cause and follow us on Facebook during this event.
