So what are we doing... well, as a fundriaser for the Royal Air Force Associations Wings Appeal this year, we are attempting to fly to 50 states in America in less than 50 hours on our squadron flight simulator. Cadets from the squadron will be flying a number of legs and performing either a touch and go or a full stop landing in each of the states.
The challenge is not going to be easy, the cadets will have to plan their flying route, check the weather and program the aircraft to fly the route. This is before they are in the air!!! Once Airborne, they will have to carry out regular fuel checks, navigate the route, follow Air Traffic Controller procedures to name but a few. Once getting near to the airports they will have to think and talk about the descent and landing to ensure they get it right! and all against the clock. Not an easy task as the simulator will be downloading the weather at it is in the states, so flying in real time and real weather!!
The cadets will be sponsored to flying a leg of the trip. Each leg can be between 1 and half hours with a number of touch and go's and landings, to a 5 hour straight flight to their destination.
To keep the morale up, we will be serving in flight meals to keep them toped up and focused on the job in hand. As you can see we try and make the flight experience and workload as real as possible for the cadets to make it more of a challenge.
It's not only the guys in the cockpit working hard, using our Air Traffic Control suite, other cadets will be keeping the aircraft and crew on track and ensuring a quick and smooth approach to the airports. Keeping the crew on their toes and monitoring the flight plan and other aircraft.
